The modern world is ignorant of the supernatural. In fact, those who believe in a Divine creator are often seen as being detached from reality.
A society steeped in materialism believes only in that which is visible and perceived by the senses. Such a worldview is the consequence of the Age of Enlightenment which resulted in a shift away from the concept of a world imbued with the spiritual to a belief that pure rationality explained all things in the world.
Even the language used to describe this period when man moved away from God as the source of all created things belies the assumption that previous ages were mere ignorance. Hence the term “Enlightenment” is meant to contrast with the “Dark Ages” where life was directed to God.
God and Satan have always been a part of the human experience. In fact, we live in a world which denies the one true God of Christianity and denounces Him as a myth of the unenlightened while at the same time the occult, New Age spirituality, and gnosticism grow in popularity. This development should be no surprise as a world that drifts away from the Truth will always seek other sources to focus their spiritual yearning.
Humans are born to worship and are endowed with a religious impulse and if they don't have the source of truth, beauty, and goodness, God, to worship they will stumble into the worship of false gods, material goods, or themselves.
Humans will worship something. We are spiritual beings. We cannot be separated from our spiritual impulse. The unity of body and soul in the human being seeks union with the Divine.
Unfortunately, many people in our modern age substitute politics, social justice, money, or power for God. The initial temptation of man was based on lies of Satan---the lie that we don't need God and that the world can offer us knowledge and happiness that is greater than God.
The whole course of mankind was altered by this original lie. Yet the pursuit of anything other than God will never bring us true happiness or joy. We can strive to be happy through our worldly desires---but worshiping the worldly objects of our desire only further alienates us from happiness. This is the reason that those who attain power or riches only want more of what they have--it never satisfies the yearning.
The internal need we have for freedom and joy only comes from God. Being free to do whatever you want is mere license and not a substitute for true freedom. For true freedom is the ability to pursue what you ought, not what you simply desire.
Seeking pleasure above the Divine is just bondage to desire. We are slaves to our passions when we aren't pursuing God and virtue.
“There is a God-shaped vacuum in every man that only Christ can fill.”
St. Augustine
What helps you maintain your focus on the eternal things of God?
Reminds me of G.K. Chesterton saying that a person who doesn't believe anything, will believe anything.
